Myravelle

Despite the bed, Myravelle still ended up on the hard floor beneath Byzarien, kissing lazily, enjoying their post-love bliss. She had let her magic run wild, spilling not only into Byzarien, but all around them. She was certain traces of it still clung to their skin and the corners of the small room. The blood made their bodies slide together. Little Nightmare cawed from the windowsill, but they ignored the bird for a few moments, fully entangled in one another.

The door to their cottage swung open, and two fairies carrying folded clothing and trays screamed. Their eyes widened at the blood and the dagger on the floor. Myravelle and Byzarien froze in place. Little Nightmare continued to screech.

“The human attacked her!” the young woman shrieked and dropped the garments on the floor. The second fairy, a young man, set the trays on the table, and they both lunged forward to grab Byzarien, while Myravelle was bewildered by shock.

“This behavior is not accepted here, Eglantyne scum,” the first fairy said as she tugged Byzarien’s arm. “You will be put to death.”

“No, no, no! You don’t understand,” Byzarien blurted. He had turned bright red. “I-I d-didn’t!”

Little Nightmare set flight and flapped around the small space, adding to the chaos. Byzarien shoved both fairies to the ground. They both jumped up and drew their wands, pointing them at him.

“Stop.” Myravelle finally found her voice and positioned herself before the fairies. The young man turned toward the door to avoid her nakedness. “He did not attack me.”

“Miss, please.” The young woman grabbed a sheet from the bed and tossed it to Myravelle. “I don’t know how things are in the kingdom, but you do not need to protect your attacker.”

The glittering ink of darkness swirled in Myravelle’s chest and itched toward her fingertips. Runes glowed over the faces of fairies, and she knew she could obliterate them with a mere twirl of her finger. Little Nightmare landed on her shoulder and nuzzled her cheek. She took a cleansing breath and blinked the runes away; she was not there to make enemies.

“Listen well,” Myravelle stepped forward and ripped the fairies’ arms away from Byzarien, who grabbed a handful of his clothing from the floor to cover himself. “He is my lover, not an attacker.”

“But, but,” the male fairy said, gesturing to the dagger and the blood.

Myravelle snatched the dagger and placed it against his cheek, making the fairy’s smooth brown skin pale a shade. “What if I told you, I am the one who used the blade because he likes it?”

The two fairies scuttled toward the door, noses wrinkled. “The queen expects you at the Hollow when the bells chime at midday,” the young woman muttered before she pulled the door open, and the two servants vanished.

Byzarien placed his hand over his chest and took a few deep breaths. “That was intense,” he said and reached for Myravelle, who dropped her sheet and embraced him.

“I would never have let them hurt you,” she said, rising on her toes to kiss him.
